Young learners

Learning Murals are an excellent way to enrich a young child’s environment and feed their curiosity. At eight months, our son Abe contributed by scribbling and occasionally tasting the crayons. We still found that the time we spent coloring together was overwhelmingly positive and fun. With each new poster, he does more coloring and learns new things. Consider these factors as you get started with your toddler.

Eating crayons

Children gather valuable information about their world by putting things in their mouths, including crayons. Purchase non-toxic crayons and keep them safely out of reach except when coloring. If they do go in the mouth, just remind your child as you gently remove the crayon. Encourage them to focus on the poster. It’s hard to eat crayons when you’re using them.

Tearing paper

We mount Learning Murals on the wall and leave them up for a very long time. The best way we’ve found to keep the poster securely fastened to the wall is to fully tape down every edge. The extra tape tape reduces a child’s temptation to pick at the edges and pull the poster down or tear the paper.

Coloring the walls

Parents worry that allowing kids to color on the walls sets an unfortunate example that will eventually ruin their interior design. We have found that the paper on the wall becomes a boundary that kids understand and respect. Close supervision and clear boundaries as you start doing Learning Murals with your child will help set the stage for success. Blue tape around all the edges can provide a clear, boundary. We use washable crayons and clean the wall with a wet sponge when it gets tagged.

Suggested posters

These Learning Murals are designed with young learners in mind. The simple images are big and easy to color in big strokes. Extra space between items helps children focus and gives them space to draw and color outside the lines.
